Ojos de Brujo ("Sorcerer's eyes" in Spanish) is an eight-piece band from Barcelona, Spain formed in 1998. The band describes its style as "hip-hop with a little flamenco", and is comprised of guitarists Ramón and Paco, singer Marina, percussionists Xavi and Max, DJ/keyboard player Panko, drummer/percussionist Sergio, and bassist Javi. The band has received several awards, among these the Radio 3 World Music Award for Europe in 2004.
Canned Heat is a blues-rock/boogie band that formed in Los Angeles in 1965. The group has been noted for its own interpretations of blues material as well as for efforts to promote the interest in this type of music and its original artists. The Whitlams are an Australian four-piece band hailing from Newtown, New South Wales. Zabalaza is the first solo release from the South African kwaito performer, Thandiswa Mazwai. Before this album, Thandiswa was most famously known as the lead singer for the kwaito group Bongo Maffin. Zabalaza, Xhosa for Rebellion, is a shining example of the integrative style of kwaito, and Thandiswa has infused this album with the sounds of her roots: kwaito, traditional Xhosa music, mbaqanga, reggae, and even gospel music.
Cibo Matto is a New York City-based band formed by two Japanese women, Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda in 1994. Despite being based in the US rather than Japan, they have strong links with the shibuya-kei scene in their use of sampling and mixture of trip-hop and rock, but stand out amongst other such artist for their particularly strong use of Latin and South American music.
