Master is the most well-known project of bassist, vocalist, and songwriter Paul Speckmann. They were well known in the early extreme metal underground, being both one of the first death metal bands, and one of the most influential alongside Death in the emerging death metal scene. The band began in 1983, and still exists today, having released several albums with many different lineups. Paul Speckmann started out as bass player in doom band War Cry, where he met up with drummer Bill Schmidt who was drafted in to replace previous War Cry drummer, Joe Laccino.

Drummer Bud Mills was a big reason why, as his so-called "1-1" beat presaged the modern blastbeat. The band's sound more than lived up to its name. Not only did it crank thrash up to frenzied warp speeds, it also displayed chops well ahead of its time. Insanity were legendary worldwide in the '80s metal tape trading circuit, with members of Carcass and Napalm Death citing them as an influence.
More than one artist shares this name. 1) Warhammer is a German thrash metal/death metal band heavily influenced by Hellhammer. 2) Warhammer was a British death metal band from Shropshire in England formed by Shane Embury and Mitch Harris in the early 1980's. After the band split up in 1986 the duo went on to form Unseen Terror and later join grindcore pioneers Napalm Death. 3) Russian metal band.
