Daughn Gibson

There are moments of genuine noise and terror on singer-songwriter Daughn Gibson's debut solo LP, All Hell, but not of the devil's-horns kind. Instead, the 31-year-old Carlisle, Pennsylvania, resident fashions ghostly, haunting country-ish ballads out of Christian gospel samples and looping audio software while his rich baritone narrates small-town tragedy.
Gibson's affinity for country music-- as well as the genre's cherished storytelling tradition-- began when he started driving trucks for a living nearly a decade ago.

Na

Na first formed in Seattle in the early 21st Century, with all three members of the musical project arriving from Japan and taking classes at Shoreline Community College. After moving past perfunctory discussions of pink shoes and John Cage, they began to collaborate on what is usually termed "experimental music." Music that is self-consciously experimental often has an air of pretentious impenetrability about it; few and far between are the truly experimental musicians who are able to beat bold new paths through the musical wilderness.

Ellen Mary McGee

"Ellen Mary McGee has taken a turn for the macabre with her solo debut, a mixture of traditional ballads and self-penned material. Sparsely accompanied by acoustic guitar and banjo, she sings of the disappearance of 19th century Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin (Lord Franklin), child murdering gypsies (the fatal flower garden) and a lonely suicide (The Wintering). The body count is worthy of a Scwarzenegger film, but it’s compellingly executed, and makes a suitably dark companion piece to Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads." 4 Stars, Phil Mongredien, Q Magazine
