The band draws influences from other progressive acts such as Cynic and Dream Theater. However, unlike most other progressive metal bands, they have no vocalist and play solely instrumental music. In 2004, Guitarists Chris Letchford and Travis Levrier moved to Los Angeles to attend the Musicians Institute where they met drummer Pat Skeffington.

Andy Wood

Young rock/fusion virtuoso Andy Wood started out on the mandolin at the very tender age of 5. Coming from a very music-oriented family in east Tennessee, Andy's first musical love was bluegrass - learning how to play the mandolin and becoming a proficient musician from his grandfather (Paul Birchfield) and his cousin Brian Arrowood, who is a monster fiddle player and currently the band leader for country artist Mat Stillwell.

Tony Macalpine

Tony MacAlpine (born August 29, 1960 in Springfield, Massachusetts) is a guitar and keyboard virtuoso who came on to the neo classical/shred scene in the mid 80s. He later experimented with jazz rock fusion and combined it with his classical training, as can be heard on Chromaticity (2001). He has released many solo albums in his career. Some of his other projects include CAB, Planet X, Steve Vai and Ring of Fire.

Since its inception G3 has featured many guitarists including: Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Robert Fripp, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, Adrian Legg, Paul Gilbert and many other special guests, including Steve Lukather, Steve Morse and drummer Mike Portnoy.
