Ska legends The Hotknives were originally formed in 1982 in England by a group of friends interested in ska, dub, reggae and Northern Soul. They recorded two live albums, "Live at the boatman" and "Live and Skanking" before recording their first studio album, "The Way Things Are" in 1989. Having reached the top of the 3rd Wave ska scene and been banned from Radio in the UK, the band decided to call it a day in 1993.
Pioneer, Keb Darge has been around the northern soul & funk scene since the start and is possibly the best-known and most highly regarded DJ of such genres.
He is also directly involved in the development of what he termed "deep funk"

Freda Charcelia Payne (born September 19, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American singer and actress. As a teenager, she attended the Institute of Musical Arts; she soon began singing radio commercial jingles and took part in (and won many of) local TV and radio talent shows. In 1963, she moved to New York City and worked with many different singers including Quincy Jones, Pearl Bailey, and Bill Cosby.
The Supremes were a very successful motown all-female singing group active from 1959 until 1977, performing at various times doo-wop, pop, soul, broadway showtunes, psychedelia, and disco. One of Motown's signature acts, The Supremes were the most successful African-American musical act of the 1960s, recording twelve #1 hits between 1964 and 1969, many of them written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland.

They signed a recording contract with Pye Records and released their best known studio album, The New Religion in 1966. He's particularly known for his cover of Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine". In the 1970s the band had hit singles in the UK Singles Chart with " I'll Go Where Your Music Takes Me" and "Now Is The Time".
Maxine Ella Brown (born 18 August 1939, in Kingstree, South Carolina) is an American soul singer. She began singing as a child, performing with two New York based gospel groups when she was a teenager. In 1960, she signed with the small Nomar record label, who released the smooth soul ballad "All in My Mind" late in the year. The single became a hit, climbing to number two on the R&B charts (number 19 pop), and it was quickly followed by "Funny", which peaked at number three.
