After speaking to a couple members of the quintet, it becomes clear that they also took a firm stance against presenting a single bandleader. Equally crucial is that they wanted to invent a word that conveys no preconceived musical connotations. "It's a nonsense word that my girlfriend came up with," said saxophonist Ben Wendel. "We wanted a short, memorable word with a nondefinable genre connection.

The Budos Band

The Budos Band are an "Instrumental Staten-Island Afro-Soul" outfit recording on the Daptone Records label. The band has eleven members (up to thirteen members at times) who play instrumental music that is self-described as "Afro-Soul," a term and sound which - in a recent interview - baritone saxophone player Jared Tankel elucidates as, being drawn from Ethiopian music the band had been listening to that had a soul undercurrent to it, which the band then "sprinkled a little bit of sweet 60's stuff on top" of.

John Abercrombie

John Abercrombie (b. 1944) is a U.S. jazz guitarist. Abercrombie was born on 16th December 1944 in Port Chester, New York. He first came to prominence with fusion-oriented recordings in the 1970s. His first album, Timeless, with Jack DeJohnette, and Mahavishnu Orchestra's Jan Hammer was an international success. He is also known for his work with Stark Reality, Billy Cobham, Ralph Towner, and the Brecker Brothers.

Zonderhoof

Zonderhoof are based in South Wales and their music has been described as a "killer stoner-sludge-doom-metal hybrid with some heady atmospherics". They first released their 3 track demo in 2006 which led to the release of their debut EP/Mini album on Sound Devastation Records in 2007. Their music is mostly instrumental, aggressive and very loud. Rooted in hard rock, hardcore punk and metal, the band take inspiration from a mixture of classic influences like Breach, Melvins and Black Sabbath mixed with similarities to present day bands such as High on Fire and Neurosis.
