Peppercorn Rent

It may come as a bit of a kick-to-the-gut to hear the foot-stomping strains of country, folk & bluegrass coming through a rock band here in London, England. But heartache, loss and regret have always been a cornerstone of great music and the East End has always had more than its fair share. In a small corner of the city better known for thieves, hardluck and the occasional serial murder, anything as authentic and heartfelt as Peppercornrent comes as a bit of an unexpected surprise.

Many of the oldies on this list would probably tell you the band was often brilliant ("Somebody Up There Likes Me" is regarded by at least a few of us as one of the best indiepop albums ever made), but had their moments of poo-wallowing as well (1990's "Hooked" LP is surely one of the worst...

The Week That Was

The Week That Was is the first solo project from Field Music co-founder Peter Brewis. He has released one album - the self-titled 2008 debut - under the moniker. For those that don't know Sunderland based Field Music released two full albums, the eponymous 2005 debut and 2007's Tones of Town, both of which became one of many peoples’ albums of the year. Perhaps willfully to some, Field Music, on the cusp of breaking through, decided, "to get off the band treadmill" concerned that being in a band in the traditional sense was restricting their creative output.
