Stanley Beckford

Stanley was born February 17, 1942 in the parish of Portland. He was orphaned as a child and wound up living in Kingston. Taking a path that other Jamaican recording artists followed, he began singing in church, and then gained prominence by winning on the Vere Johns radio talent competition. Stanley recorded reggae as Stanley & The Turbines and in The Starlites. It was the joint discovery of the Aba-Shanti-I Sound System and digitally sequenced music which first inspired Steve Vibronics to try his hand at building dub tunes. A minimal studio was put together at home during 1995 using the most basic of equipment - a dilapidated 16 track mixer, reverb and echo units, a couple of synths and a an Atari computer - all mixed down onto cassette tape. The Vibronics sound was introduced to UK dub pioneers Zion Train in 1996, and so begun a fruitful relationship with their 'Universal Egg' label that lasts to the present day.

Aba Shanti I

Aba used to deejay Jah Tubby's sound system and at that time he was known as Jasmine Joe. Those of you that were around the sound system scene in the eighties will remember the slightly-extrovert mic man that Jah Tubby's had; that was Aba. When Joe embraced the Rastafarian faith he adopted a new and more positive attitude and with his rediscovered faith a new name. That name was and is Aba Shanti-I, pronounced ABA SHANTI-EYE not ONE. So you see, the name Aba Shanti-I is not just the name of the sound system, it is the name of the person that is playing the sound.
