Sydney Symphony Orchestra

1932 was a momentous year for Sydney. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, an engineering miracle of the day was opened in March. In July 1932 the Australian Broadcasting Corporation was established, and with it the group of musicians that would become the Sydney Symphony. The Orchestra consisted of just 24 players, who performed incidental music for radio plays, music for the dinner hour and broadcasts of concert repertoire.

The New York Philharmonic is the oldest active symphony orchestra in the United States, organized during 1842. Based in New York City, the Philharmonic performs most of its concerts at Avery Fisher Hall. The orchestra is older than any other American symphonic institution in existence by nearly four decades; its record-setting 14,000th concert was given in December 2004.[1] Since 2002, the Philharmonic's music director has been Lorin Maazel, whose tenure is scheduled to conclude at the end of the 2008-2009 season.

Edward Williams

Surrey-born Williams was already a seasoned soundtrack creator by the time he recorded his Life on Earth accompaniments. Deploying a discreet orchestral arsenal – clarinet, flute, harp and strings alongside vibraphone, marimbas, keyboards, percussion and slivers of electronics – his pieces were adroitly designed to both mimic and augment the often stunning visuals, underlining the fluttering, flickering and often magisterial strangeness of the natural world as laid bare by Attenborough.
