Banda Black Rio

Mixing R&B, funk, jazz and samba elements, Banda Black Rio, led by Oberdan Magalhães, were one of the first to undertake the fusion of Brazilian rhythms with international black music. Formed in 1976, the band's unique and pioneering samba-jazz-funk sound has attracted thousands of worshiping fans across generations. The band broke up in 1980, but came back together in 1999 in a new formation led by William Magalhães, Oberdan Magalhães' son. Discography:

Heavily influenced by David Sanborn, instrumentalist Jaared is a Washington, DC-based alto and soprano saxophonist who has made smooth jazz and crossover jazz his primary focus in the ‘90s and 2000s; other saxophonists (alto, tenor, soprano or otherwise) who have had a direct or indirect impact on Jaared's playing include Grover Washington, Jr., Nelson Rangell, Ronnie Laws and George Howard. Jaared is capable of playing other types of instrumental music, including fusion, soul-jazz and post-bop--and he is no stranger to R&B.

Good music is felt not heard. Gramatik apparently understood that at an age of 3 according to his mother as she used to catch him glued to the radio in his older sister's room whenever there was an old funk or rhythm & blues joint on, tapping his leg on the floor along with the beat. Damn, talking about a sign on what will your child do when he grows up! Parents got him taking piano lessons in the elementary music school when he was in 2nd grade, but he dropped out 2 years later because he wasn't feeling that whole classical music thing as that was the only genre they were teaching.

The Transatlantics

Based in Adelaide, South Australia, The Transatlantics are an eight-piece deep funk and soul outfit inspired by the great soul performers of the late 60's and early 70's. The Transatlantics came together in 2007 born of a shared love for gritty old vinyl, cheap guitars and quality barbequed meats. Described by NME as "a young, white Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings," The Transatlantic's sound invokes the grainy warmth of Southern American Soul and the rhythmic grunt of classic James Brown-era funk.
