Don McLean

Don McLean (born 2nd October 1945 in New Rochelle, New York) is an American singer-songwriter, most famous for his 1971 song "American Pie", about the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. The song spawned the phrase "The Day the Music Died", referring to the day of the crash. Early in his career, McLean was mentored by the folk legend Pete Seeger, and accompanied Seeger on his Clearwater boat up the Hudson River in 1969 to protest at environmental pollution in the river.

Damien Jurado

Damien Jurado is a singer-songwriter in the indie-rock tradition of Seattle, Washington. His music is regarded as being heavily influenced by folk music. Over the years he has released albums on many labels; today his primary label is Secretly Canadian. He was once in the hardcore band Coolidge with Seattle's David Bazan, who formerly fronted the bands Pedro the Lion and HEADPHONES and now performs as a solo artist. He was also an early member of Raft of Dead Monkeys. He teaches kindergarten.

Joanna Newsom

Joanna Newsom (born January 18, 1982) started taking piano lessons at a very early age and played for a couple of years, but switched to the harp at seven. Her approach to the harp, from the percussive aspects of her playing to her chord changes, was also influenced by West African and Venezuelan harp music, which she began studying at a folk music camp she attended in her early teens. At the same time, she also listened to more vocal-based folk, punk, and jazz like Karen Dalton, Texas Gladden, Patti Smith, and Billie Holiday.

Tracey Thorn (born September 26, 1962, in Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire) is an English pop singer and songwriter. She is best known as being one half of the duo Everything But the Girl. She grew up in Hatfield, Hertfordshire and studied English at the University of Hull, where she graduated in 1984 with First Class Honours. She lives with her EBTG partner Ben Watt in North London. The couple have twin daughters born in 1998, and a son born in 2001.
