Welcome to YDNA Boardriders - We promote Boadriders gigs, manufacture skateboards, surfboards and some fresh clothing attire. We have our store based in Bournemouth selling YDNA gear and the best of the rest - Real, Flip, Loaded, Landscape, Death, Heroin, Lush, Alvar, Z-flex and more. As a brand we are pretty pleased to have worked with some great bands, skaters and surfers in our time and look forward to continuing that trend. We have a pretty solid audience base passionate about music and ready to party!

    Ben Howard is currently amassing an army of fans all over the world. His laid back style often compared with Jose Gonzalez and Ray Le Montange is a blend of his own experiences and unique playing style. In the last couple of years Ben Howard has been on tour with Xavier Rudd throughout Europe, Jason Mraz in the US, Fink through Germany, Angus and Julia Stone through Europe and Sweden and is currently embarking on his own headline shows. He hit the French download charts earlier this year and is currently sponsored by Quiksliver as a musician.

    Rob Sawyer from Melbourne, Australia combines a raw, organic blend of punk folk, and hillbilly reggae! Rob’s song writing reflects a diverse scope of musical inspiration. Armed with a voice that has evolved strong and compelling, and the well-worn fret board of a much-loved guitar, illustrates the passion of an eloquent and enthused performer.

    Both Ben Howard and Rob Sawyer entertained the fans at the Boardmasters Beach Sessions 2009 in Newquay, they find themselves on the same stage again to launch Boardriders Live. A new website and more importantly a platform for performers, promoters and the Boardriders scene.

    This pub was owned by Oasis' Tour Manger Pete Bell. It was an 8 month adventure, putting a gig on every Saturday and putting on a line up for the Legendary 3 day Wimborne Folk Festival. Really good way for us to road test bands but we have decided to concentrate on YDNA Boardriders events for now.

Slick, stylish, moody rockers with a mix of some bluesy retro cool, and UK 80's post punk influence. Went to the show expecting a full rock fix, but have to say while I enjoyed the general vibe, it lacked something for me in the music department.

Seems they opt for style over substance too often, relying on production - more about the 'sound'. Lot's of effects, drony washes to basic beats, but just not enough notes and chords for my ears. Bass was sometime busy under the washy guitar, and might have provided this but it doesn't work when the volume is too high in some pretty rough boomy acoustics. Couldn't distinguish bass notes sitting upstairs with the lower mids bouncing off the roof.

When it did work, it was because the bass player switched to guitar, and provided some extra rhythms, all in one key, but it lifted the energy and was quite a bit of fun. Slide guitar against almost an electronic beat for their signature tunes.

Still looking for my rock fix!

The Era of the Audience

The audience is becoming more important than ever before - we always thought it was always about the music. But it's more than that, it's about the experiences of audiences, and new media technology is enabling the audience to become 'self aware'.

Audiences make the gig - it's their reactions that make everyone feel whether it was a good night or not. The band also feed off the audiences energy. This has always been accepted.

Now however it is possible that an audience can have a voice, can represent itself, perhaps lead by an individual or group of individuals who the audience accept speaks on their behalf - blogs, pictures, videos, anecdotes.

We are social beings, and media has been dictated by so called 'tastemakers' who after all are just trying to pick audiences. technology empowers audiences to take their destiny into their own hands and state their opinions, state history as they see it, and even dictate demands.

Watch the changes in the next few years as the Era of the Audience starts to gather momentum to the benefit of its members, for more enjoyable, more connected and even more economically beneficial experiences as they may even be an entity with whom to negotiate!

Okkervil River... Scala in September

A last minute trip to Kings Cross after a mate donated 4 tickets to see OR. It was a packed venue (although when you stand in the Scala foyer it always sounds like no one's turned up for the show). By the time we had a cold beer in hands and found a place to stand we were ready to be treated to a excellent performance by these until now unknown musicians from the US of A... thankfully lots of other people had heard of them and they have a great fanbase all singing a long. I even started clapping during the last number.

Xavier Rudd @ the Opera House Bournemouth, 29th June 2008

Walking into the newly restored Opera House in Bournemouth I couldn’t help but smile in excited anticipation. Could it have been the new atmosphere of the multi-million pound restoration that gave the Opera House a brilliant ambience? Was it because, once hearing their first few songs, I had immediately decided that supporting band the Wishbones were a band that I knew I had to watch? Or was it the fact that one of my very favourite artists would be gracing the stage in a matter of minutes to immerse the crowd in his didgeridoo and percussion inspired set? Perhaps all of these answers are correct.

The curtains opened and the lights went up. The Australian multi-instrumentalist, Xavier Rudd had positioned himself inside his trademark circle of three didgeridoo’s, bongo drums, a foot drum, chimes, harmonica, slide guitar and countless other percussive instruments. I couldn’t help but wonder what those who had never before had the pleasure of witnessing an Xavier show we’re thinking. He opened the show with the fast paced ‘Up In Flames’ from his new LP Dark Shades of Blue and this was a sure sign of the strong positive energy he would provide for the rest of his uplifting two hour set.

He continued playing didge-inspired pieces with the help of a live drummer and by the third song the crowd was seduced by his rhythmic and melodic musical spell, bopping along uncontrollably. Xavier was in form and he continued his show with the perfect balance of new songs and much loved tracks from previous albums. His heart-felt vocals soared over the slide guitar riffs and throbbing almost tribal-like drum beats. At times he would slow the pace a little to play more folk and roots-styled pieces like ‘Messages’. ‘Let me be’ once again proved to be a crowd favourite as the whole Opera House sang along to the infectious tune.

Xavier didn’t address the crowd very often, instead allowing his music to do the talking - yet the crowd didn’t seem to mind as the electric energy flowed from Xavier to them for the entire set. Their feet stamped as they cheered. When Xavier announced that the show was coming to an end it only amplified their cries for more. After a short, much needed break (for the crowd as well as Xavier) he emerged back to centre stage with his electric guitar. In true Xavier style he went on to provide the crowd with an energetic and uplifting encore, playing singles ‘White Moth’ and ‘Energy Song’, both from previous albums.

Xavier is a truly talented and an amazingly unique artist who gives it his all in every performance - tonight was no different. He once again provided a wonderful show, unquestionably confirming his reputation as a top live performer. No one could have possibly gone home feeling uninspired or unfulfilled by Australian crowd pleaser – me included.
