William Onyeabor studied cinematography in Russia for many years, returning to Nigeria in the mid-70s to start his own Wilfilms music label and to set up a music and film production studio. He recorded a number of hit songs in Nigeria during the 70s, the biggest of which was "Atomic Bomb" in 1978. William has now been crowned a High Chief in Enugu, where he lives today as a successful businessman working on government contracts and running his own flour mill.
Yaaba Funk are a band playing funky Hi-Life and Afrobeat. influenced by Alhaji K Frimpong, Fela Kuti, Oscar Sulley, Ghanaian and Nigerian sounds from the 70s as well as funk, broken beat and jazz. Based in Brixton in south London, they play regularly on the London circuit and are know for electrifying shows featuring tight and powerful Afro rhythm section. Their debut LP, provisionally entitled "Afrobeast", will be released in 2009.
Marcos "Marquitos" Garcia was born into a musical Cuban family, and is currently a member of American Afrobeat pioneers, Antibalas. Armed with his childhood Casio keyboard, in late 2002 he embarked upon an experiment in afrobeat. The outcome was Manifest Tone Vol.1, a collection of raw and dirty, Lo-Fi tracks to make your body move. Encouraged by his Antibalas bandmates to keep exploring, Garcia ventured into the world of 1980's drum machine beats and sounds.
