Clout

Clout were originally a five-piece, South African all-girl group formed in 1977, best known for their song "Substitute", which sold millions of copies. "Substitute" was a cover version of an obscure Righteous Brothers song, composed by Willie Wilson. Clout's version reached number two in the UK singles chart for three weeks in June 1978, and number one in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and South Africa. It only reached number sixty-seven in the U.S. for one week in September 1978, but stayed in the Billboard chart for ten weeks altogether.

Mahotella Queens

With a style of music they call Mbaqanga, The Mahotella Queens (Nobesthutu Mbada, Hilda Tloubatla and Mildred Mangxola) have become South Africa's most successful vocal group through their combination of traditional songs with high energy, funky, dance-oriented music. The Mahotella Queens first came to prominence in the 1960s as backing singers for the 'Lion of Soweto' Mahlathini. As well as recording with Mahlathini, they released a number of albums in their own right. They were able to use their fame to become highly influential figures in the fight against apartheid.

Fokofpolisiekar is a South African Afrikaans pop punk band from Bellville in Cape Town, formed in 2003. The band has been the cause of much controversy amongst the general public - generally due to their band name translating to "Fuck Off Police Car" in English, as well as the lyrical content of many of their songs. The WiLd EyeS

Formed in mid 2004, The Wild Eyes were Nikhil Singh on vocals, guitar and synth, Gareth Dawson on bass and backing vocals, Len Cockcroft on drums, percussion and backing vocals. The band’s first full length debut was a limited edition album titled: ‘Our Love has a Special Violence’ produced by Dirk Hugo and released in 2005 on One Minute Trolley Dash records. 1.Bonginkosi Dlamini, aka Zola, is a South African poet, actor, and kwaito musician. He also presents Zola 7, a television show named for him, on SABC 1.
Born in the Soweto ghettos of Johannesburg, South Africa, Dlamini spent his formative years in one of the roughest and notorious ghettos around, Zola, hence his name. Unemployment, alcoholism, and single parent families are the norm in Zola.
