After the split of Gillan in 1982, the bearded John McCoy (bass guitar; 19 stone) recruited session musicians 'Tubby' Vinnie Reed (drums; 22 stone), 'Big' Mac Baker (guitars; 24 stone) and Nicky Moore (vocals; 20 stone and 5'6") for his solo project.
Initially christened 'Dinosaur', they changed their names after complaints from a similarly titled California blues outfit.

The Ribbon is a new music project based in Auckland, New Zealand and consisting of Campbell Birch and Luke Munn. Mixing guitars with laptop, affected vocals and keyboard, the bands instrumentation reflects their organic approach to producing electronic music. The band recently began playing shows throughout the Auckland region, as well as self-producing, packaging, and distributing a 6 song EP. The origins of New Zealand's Verlaines can be traced back as early as 1979, with the group's founder Graeme Downes took direct inspiration from fellow Dunedin group, the Clean to form a band of his own. It wasn't until 1981 that the group made their first public appearance with their initial five-piece line-up. The band have so far released seven full-length albums on three different labels, one mini album, three singles and two compilations.
