Giant Sand

Giant Sand, originally The Giant Sandworms, is an American rock band formed in 1985, based in Tucson, Arizona, USA (although Los Angeles, California was its home for many years). Overseen by singer-songwriter-guitarist-pianist Howe Gelb, its membership has shifted over the years -- at times with each album -- though for a long while the drum and bass duties were handled by John Convertino and Joey Burns, who went on to form Calexico.

The Secret History

The Secret History is an NYC-based band featuring cult songwriter Michael Grace, Jr. and his decade-long co-conspirators from the adored (but obscured) indiepop group My Favorite. The band features the debut of vocalist Lisa Ronson (daughter of glam rock legend Mick Ronson) supported by Jamie Babic. Grace's lyrics create drive-in theatres out of bare bedsit walls, while Ronson's singings alternates between the emotive and the plaintive -- one minute channeling Dusty Springfield, the next, Kirsty Macoll.

The Gadsdens

The Gadsdens don’t quite fit. They almost do, but they’re slightly the wrong shape to properly fit into the pop cylinder. Shuffling together elements of blue-eyed soul, infectious hooks, rhythmic piano lines, and the instantly loveable vocals of Jody Gadsden they deal out songs of awkward beauty. They don’t look pop either, peddling an indie scruffy chic that’s more Hoxton than West End. Not that they’re in any way, shape or form a fashion band unless, of course fashion means striking out from the pack with your own darning sense of style and imagination.
